She was a British ballerina, a choreographer, and a teacher. Markova was famous for her work with the Ballets Russes. She was also a founding dancer for many groups. These included the Rambert Dance Company and the American Ballet Theatre. She helped start the English National Ballet as a co-founder and director. Because of her amazing skill, she was named a prima ballerina assoluta. This is a very high honor. She was one of only two English dancers to ever receive this title.

Her journey into dance began in London when she was a young child. Her family lived in Finsbury Park, and later in Muswell Hill. Doctors suggested she dance to help make her weak limbs stronger. Her father even built a stage in their back garden for her to use. She and her sisters would perform there in costumes they made themselves.

At age nine, she met the famous dancer Anna Pavlova. This meeting inspired her to pursue ballet seriously. She made her stage debut at age ten in a show called Dick Whittington and His Cat. At that time, she was known as "Little Alicia."

In 1920, she began formal studies with a Russian dancer named Serafina Astafieva. Astafieva had been part of the famous Ballets Russes. When Markova was only thirteen, a man named Sergei Diaghilev saw her dance. He was looking for new talent for his company. He invited her to join the Ballets Russes in Monte Carlo in 1925. This happened just one month after her fourteenth birthday. Diaghilev gave her the Russian-sounding stage name Alicia Markova. She kept this name for the rest of her life.

Markova's career was filled with many famous people and roles.

During her time with the Ballets Russes, she worked with artists like Pablo Picasso and Igor Stravinsky. She performed in many different ballets, such as Little Red Riding Hood. One of her most treasured roles was in the ballet Giselle. She first performed this role on New Year's Day in 1934. She also became famous for performing "The Dying Swan." In 1960, she even created a special duet called "Radha-Krishna" with an Indian dancer named Ram Gopal.

Even after she stopped dancing professionally, Markova stayed busy in the dance world. She retired from professional dancing in January 1963 at age 52. She spent her later years as a teacher, director, and choreographer. She taught master classes on television and was a professor at the University of Cincinnati. She also served as a leader for many dance organizations. These included the Royal Academy of Dance and the English National Ballet. Markova passed away in a hospital in Bath on December 2, 2004. She was 94 years old.
