At age nine, she met the famous dancer Anna Pavlova. This meeting inspired her to pursue ballet seriously. She made her stage debut at age ten in a show called Dick Whittington and His Cat. At that time, she was known as "Little Alicia."

In 1920, she began formal studies with a Russian dancer named Serafina Astafieva. Astafieva had been part of the famous Ballets Russes. When Markova was only thirteen, a man named Sergei Diaghilev saw her dance. He was looking for new talent for his company. He invited her to join the Ballets Russes in Monte Carlo in 1925. This happened just one month after her fourteenth birthday. Diaghilev gave her the Russian-sounding stage name Alicia Markova. She kept this name for the rest of her life.

Markova's career was filled with many famous people and roles. During her time with the Ballets Russes, she worked with artists like Pablo Picasso and Igor Stravinsky. She performed in many different ballets, such as Little Red Riding Hood. One of her most treasured roles was in the ballet Giselle. She first performed this role on New Year's Day in 1934. She also became famous for performing "The Dying Swan." In 1960, she even created a special duet called "Radha-Krishna" with an Indian dancer named Ram Gopal.

Even after she stopped dancing professionally, Markova stayed busy in the dance world. She retired from professional dancing in January 1963 at age 52. She spent her later years as a teacher, director, and choreographer. She taught master classes on television and was a professor at the University of Cincinnati. She also served as a leader for many dance organizations. These included the Royal Academy of Dance and the English National Ballet. Markova passed away in a hospital in Bath on December 2, 2004. She was 94 years old.

She used this professional name for the rest of her life.

Her time with the Ballets Russes introduced her to many great artists. She worked alongside figures like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. She also performed to music by Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev. Her debut role was Little Red Riding Hood in the spring of 1925. After Diaghilev died in 1929, Markova returned to England. She became a founding dancer for several major institutions. These included the Rambert Dance Company and the Vic-Wells Ballet. The latter eventually became the world-renowned Royal Ballet.

Markova was known for her incredible technical skill and expressive movement. In 1933, she was appointed the first Prima Ballerina of the Vic-Wells Ballet. She discovered a deep passion for the ballet Giselle after seeing a 1932 performance. She premiered her own version of the role on New Year's Day, 1934.

This role remained her most treasured throughout her career. She was also celebrated for her performances in The Dying Swan and Les Sylphides. In 1960, she even collaborated with Indian dancer Ram Gopal. They created a duet called "Radha-Krishna" based on Hindu mythology.

Markova was a vital force in building the infrastructure of dance. She helped found the American Ballet Theatre during her time touring the United States. In 1950, she co-founded the Festival Ballet with Anton Dolin. This company was created to celebrate the Festival of Britain. It aimed to bring ballet to new and unconventional audiences. In 1989, this company was renamed the English National Ballet. This name reflected its mission to tour classical ballet nationwide at affordable prices. Even after retiring from professional dancing in 1963, Markova remained active. She was 52 years old when she stepped away from the stage. She worked as a teacher, director, and choreographer for many years. She served as a professor at the University of Cincinnati. She also held leadership roles in many organizations, such as the Royal Academy of Dance. Markova passed away on December 2, 2004, at the age of 94. A memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey to honor her life and her massive contribution to the world of dance.
