Markova achieved the rare title of prima ballerina assoluta. This honor recognizes dancers of the highest possible skill. She was one of only two English dancers to receive this distinction. Her career spanned many decades and several different dance companies. She was a central figure in the development of British ballet.

Markova's path to the stage began with a need for physical strength. As a young child in London, she was advised to dance to strengthen her weak limbs. Her father supported her passion by building a stage in their back garden. She and her sisters performed there in handmade costumes. At age nine, she met the famous ballerina Anna Pavlova. This encounter inspired her to pursue professional training. She made her stage debut at age ten in the pantomime Dick Whittington and His Cat.

Formal training began in 1920 under Serafina Astafieva. Astafieva was a retired dancer from the Ballets Russes. She ran the Russian Dancing Academy in Chelsea, London. At age thirteen, Markova was noticed by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev. He was searching for new talent for his famous company, the Ballets Russes. In 1925, just one month after her fourteenth birthday, she joined the company in Monte Carlo. Diaghilev gave her the Russified stage name Alicia Markova. She used this professional name for the rest of her life.

Her time with the Ballets Russes introduced her to many great artists. She worked alongside figures like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. She also performed to music by Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev. Her debut role was Little Red Riding Hood in the spring of 1925.

After Diaghilev died in 1929, Markova returned to England. She became a founding dancer for several major institutions. These included the Rambert Dance Company and the Vic-Wells Ballet. The latter eventually became the world-renowned Royal Ballet.

Markova was known for her incredible technical skill and expressive movement. In 1933, she was appointed the first Prima Ballerina of the Vic-Wells Ballet. She discovered a deep passion for the ballet Giselle after seeing a 1932 performance. She premiered her own version of the role on New Year's Day, 1934.

This role remained her most treasured throughout her career. She was also celebrated for her performances in The Dying Swan and Les Sylphides. In 1960, she even collaborated with Indian dancer Ram Gopal. They created a duet called "Radha-Krishna" based on Hindu mythology.

Markova was a vital force in building the infrastructure of dance. She helped found the American Ballet Theatre during her time touring the United States. In 1950, she co-founded the Festival Ballet with Anton Dolin. This company was created to celebrate the Festival of Britain. It aimed to bring ballet to new and unconventional audiences. In 1989, this company was renamed the English National Ballet. This name reflected its mission to tour classical ballet nationwide at affordable prices. Her influence helped make ballet accessible to many more people.

Even after retiring from professional dancing in 1963, Markova remained active. She was 52 years old when she stepped away from the stage. She worked as a teacher, director, and choreographer for many years. She served as a professor at the University of Cincinnati. She also held leadership roles in many organizations, such as the Royal Academy of Dance.
