Margot Fonteyn was a legendary English ballerina who defined a golden age of dance.

She spent her entire professional life with the Sadler's Wells Ballet Company. This group eventually became known as the Royal Ballet. Her talent was so immense that Queen Elizabeth II appointed her prima ballerina assoluta. This title is the highest possible rank for a dancer within the company. Fonteyn became a global icon who helped bring ballet to television audiences worldwide.

Her training began at the age of four in England.

Because of her father's work as a mechanical engineer, her family lived in several countries. They lived in Kentucky and later moved to China. In Shanghai, she studied under the Russian expatriate Georgy Goncharov. This period was vital because it sparked her lifelong interest in the Russian style of ballet. She returned to London at age 14 to join the Vic-Wells Ballet School.

Fonteyn's rise within the company was rapid and impressive. In 1935, she succeeded Alicia Markova as the prima ballerina. The famous choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton wrote many roles specifically for her. He often used her delicate, feline grace to cast her as ethereal or otherworldly characters.

During the 1930s and 1940s, she frequently partnered with Robert Helpmann. He helped her develop her theatrical skills and became her favorite partner over the long term.

As the company moved into the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden in 1946, her fame grew. She worked closely with Michael Somes during this decade.

Her performance in The Sleeping Beauty became a signature role for both her and the company. She also excelled in Ashton's works, such as Cinderella and Sylvia. Her performance in Swan Lake was a major milestone. It proved to critics that a British dancer could master the complex classical Russian repertoire.

Fonteyn became an international celebrity through tours and media appearances. In 1949, she led the company on a tour of the United States. She also appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in the early 1950s.

These televised performances helped increase the popularity of ballet in America. In 1955, she married the Panamanian politician Roberto Arias. Her career allowed her to become a freelance dancer in 1959 due to high demand for her artistry.

A major turning point occurred in 1962 when she partnered with Rudolf Nureyev.

Nureyev had recently defected from the Kirov Ballet. Although Fonteyn was 19 years older than him, they became an international sensation. Their partnership was famous for pushing both dancers to reach their absolute peak. They performed classical works like Le Corsaire Pas de Deux and Romeo and Juliet.

Nureyev even adapted certain choreographies specifically to highlight their combined talents.

Life brought significant challenges during her later years. In 1964, an assassination attempt on her husband left him a quadriplegic. This required Fonteyn to provide constant care for him for the rest of his life. She entered semi-retirement in 1972 but continued to dance occasionally. In 1979, the Royal Ballet officially honored her as prima ballerina assoluta. She eventually retired to Panama to write books and raise cattle. She passed away from ovarian cancer exactly 29 years after her famous premiere with Nureyev.
