He is widely credited with creating a specifically English genre of ballet. This means he developed a unique style of dance that felt native to British culture. Ashton worked across many different artistic fields. He served as a director and choreographer for opera, film, and revue. His leadership helped shape the identity of the Royal Ballet, one of the world's most famous dance companies.

Ashton's career followed a path of intense dedication and technical growth. He began his training as a pupil under the dancer Léonide Massine.

After Massine left London, Ashton studied with Marie Rambert. In 1926, Rambert encouraged him to attempt his first choreography. His first attempt was a small ballet titled A Tragedy of Fashion. He also maintained a long, vital partnership with designer Sophie Fedorovitch. She acted as his artistic collaborator, creating the costumes and scenery for his works for over twenty years.

His artistic style often involved deep research into historical movements. For his 1930 ballet, Capriol Suite, he used music based on 16th-century French styles. Ashton researched the specific dances of that era to ensure accuracy. He combined traditional forms like the pavane and the bransle with new movements. He was known for mixing robust, masculine leaps with very elegant, courtly duets. This ability to blend different textures became a hallmark of his creative process.

Ashton's early life was marked by significant changes in location and social pressure. He was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in 1904. His family lived in Lima, Peru, before returning to Ecuador and eventually moving to England. His middle-class family strongly opposed his desire to become a professional dancer. They viewed the stage as an unsuitable career for him. Despite this, Ashton pursued his ambition, even working in a London import-export firm while he trained. He eventually overcame these obstacles to become a leading figure in the dance world.

His professional significance is tied to his long association with Ninette de Valois.

He served as the chief choreographer for her company from 1935 until 1963. This company underwent several name changes, including the Vic-Wells Ballet and the Sadler's Wells Ballet. Eventually, it became the Royal Ballet. Ashton later succeeded de Valois as the director of the company. He held this leadership position until his retirement in 1970. His work provided a foundation for the company's international reputation.

Ashton created many works that remain essential to the ballet repertoire today. In 1946, he created Symphonic Variations for the Royal Opera House. This ballet was described as a masterpiece that defined English dancing.

In 1948, he choreographed a major three-act version of Cinderella. This production was famous for its comedy, particularly the scenes involving the stepsisters. Other notable works include La fille mal gardée (1960) and the ballet film The Tales of Beatrix Potter (1971). His ability to move between serious, plotless ballets and funny, character-driven stories showed his immense range.

Ashton's influence extended far beyond the traditional ballet stage. He applied his choreographic skills to many other media and disciplines. He worked on West End musicals and revues, such as Gay Hussar in 1933. He also directed operas at venues like Glyndebourne and the Royal Opera House. His work in film, such as the 1971 Beatrix Potter project, brought ballet to a wider audience. By connecting dance to music, film, and theater, Ashton helped integrate ballet into the broader landscape of the performing arts.
