He is widely considered the preeminent male ballet dancer of the 20th century. Many experts believe he was one of the greatest dancers of all time. He was known for his technical brilliance and intense stage presence. His work helped elevate the role of the male dancer in the world of ballet. He transformed how audiences perceived the strength and importance of men on stage.

Nureyev was born on March 17, 1938, on a Trans-Siberian train. The train was traveling near Lake Baikal in Siberia, within the Soviet Union. He was born into a Tatar Muslim family. His mother, Farida, was traveling toward Vladivostok at the time. His father, Khamet, was a Red Army political commissar stationed in that region. Nureyev grew up as the only son with three older sisters. He often felt a strong connection to his Tatar heritage.

His passion for dance began after watching a performance called Song of the Cranes. He eventually moved to Leningrad to train at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet. This school was the associate school of the Mariinsky Ballet. In 1958, he graduated and joined the Kirov Ballet. He quickly became a principal dancer, which is a top-ranking soloist. During his three years with the Kirov, he performed 15 different roles. He often partnered with senior ballerinas like Natalia Dudinskaya and Ninel Kurgapkina.

In 1961, Nureyev made a choice that became an international sensation. While the Kirov Ballet was touring Paris, he decided to defect to the West. Defection means choosing to leave one's home country to live in another. This happened during the Cold War, a period of high tension between the Soviet Union and Western nations. KGB agents tried to stop him and return him to the Soviet Union. He refused to go back, fearing he would be imprisoned.

Instead, he asked for asylum in France. This was the first time a Soviet artist had defected during the Cold War.

Nureyev became a global superstar after moving to the West. He joined The Royal Ballet in London and worked with the famous ballerina Margot Fonteyn. Their partnership was legendary and highly celebrated by audiences. They performed together in ballets like Romeo and Juliet in 1965.

Their popularity was so great that fans would tear up programs to create confetti. They would throw the paper at the dancers during curtain calls. Sometimes the duo would receive more than 20 curtain calls in a single performance.

Beyond dancing, Nureyev was a highly skilled choreographer. A choreographer is someone who creates and arranges dance movements. He produced his own versions of many classical works. These included famous ballets such as Swan Lake, Giselle, and La Bayadère. He also worked with the National Ballet of Canada, staging a new production of Sleeping Beauty in 1972. From 1983 to 1989, he served as the director of the Paris Opera Ballet. In this role, he was also the chief choreographer.

Nureyev's influence reached many different parts of the world. He performed as a guest artist in New York, Chicago, Sydney, and Rome. He even helped the newly formed Australian Ballet in 1962. His career was marked by a transition from a stateless person to a citizen of Austria in 1982. He spent much of his later life traveling and teaching younger dancers. Even after his death in 1993, his impact on the art of ballet remains profound.
