Throughout his career, he served as a principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet. He also held the position of director of the Bolshoi Theatre from 1995 to 2000. Many experts regard him as a classical dancer on par with legends like Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. His artistry is so highly valued that the critic Fyodor Lopukhov called him the "God of the dance."

His journey into the world of professional ballet began in Moscow. Born in 1940, he was the son of a mechanical engineer. In 1947, at the age of seven, he joined the Kirov pioneer amateur ballet group. He later entered the Moscow Ballet School, also known as the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. There, he studied under teachers such as Elena Romanovna Rosse and Aleksey Yermolayev. After graduating in 1958, he joined the Bolshoi Ballet. His rise was rapid, as he became a principal dancer by 1959, only in his second year with the company.

Vasiliev's dancing style helped redefine the role of the male performer in classical ballet. Unlike the traditional ideal physical form, his body revealed great physical strength. He helped develop the concept of the "strong new Bolshoi male." He described his process as moving from copying others to finding something inside himself. This approach allowed him to execute enormous leaps and turns. Many roles were created specifically for his unique abilities. These included roles in ballets like *The Tale of the Stone Flower*, *The Nutcracker*, and *Angara*. His most famous role was Spartacus, a part that made a sensational impact during a 1969 tour to London.

Central to his career was his partnership with his wife, Ekaterina Maximova. They were known as the "golden couple" of Russian ballet. The pair first danced together as classmates in 1949 and married in 1961. Their performances often carried an almost sacred aura that deeply moved audiences. They gained international exposure through the 1983 filmed version of the opera *La traviata*. In this production, Vasiliev performed in Spanish costume as a matador. Their partnership lasted for 50 years until Maximova's death in 2009. Vasiliev often stated that his wife was his greatest inspiration due to her beauty and hard work. He also believed that in partnering, the man must never get in the way of the woman.

In 1995, Vasiliev took on significant leadership responsibilities at the Bolshoi Theatre. He was appointed general and artistic director following the dismissal of Yury Grigorovich. During his tenure, he spearheaded several major international and cultural projects. In 1998, he organized a large-scale exchange between the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Ballet companies. He also facilitated an exchange with the Paris Opera Ballet. On December 31, 1999, he oversaw the first-ever New Year Ball held at the Bolshoi. Additionally, he founded the International Club of the Bolshoi Friends. He was also noted for recognizing the talent of dancers like Svetlana Zakharova. His time as director ended on August 28, 2000.

Vasiliev has received many of the most prestigious awards in the world. In 1964, he became the first Grand Prix winner at the Varna International Ballet Competition. He was also the first dancer to receive "La médaille d'or du meilleur danseur du monde," or the Gold Medal of the World's Best Dancer. In 1973, he was named a People's Artist of the USSR. His honors include the USSR State Prize and the Russian State Prize. He has also received international recognition, such as the State Order of "Merits" from France and the Order of Rio Branco from Brazil. He was even awarded the UNESCO Pablo Picasso Medal.

Even after leaving his leadership role, Vasiliev has continued to contribute to the arts. He has worked as a choreographer, creating and staging new ballets. One of his premiered works was *Lungo Viaggio Nella Notte di Natale*, set to the music of Tchaikovsky. His legacy remains significant in the field of dance. While he is sometimes less known in the West than Nureyev or Baryshnikov, this is because he remained in the Soviet Union for most of his career. Nevertheless, modern dancers like Mathias Heymann still look to his work for inspiration. His impact on the development of classical male dance continues to be felt today.
