He was born on a Trans-Siberian train near Lake Baikal in 1938. His family was Tatar, a group of people from the Soviet Union. He fell in love with dance after seeing a ballet called Song of the Cranes. Later, he studied at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in Leningrad. He was a very talented student and soon became a principal dancer.

He worked with the Kirov Ballet and danced many different roles. He even insisted on wearing tights instead of trousers during a show of Don Quixote. This showed his strong personality and his love for dance.

In 1961, Nureyev did something that shocked the whole world.

While on a tour in Paris, he chose to stay in the West. This was called a defection. He did not want to return to the Soviet Union. He asked for asylum to stay safe in France. This event was a huge sensation during the Cold War. After this, he was able to dance all over the world. He even traveled to places like New York and Australia.

Nureyev became a massive star when he joined The Royal Ballet in London.

He formed a famous partnership with a dancer named Margot Fonteyn. They were so popular that fans would tear up programs to make confetti. They would throw the paper at the dancers during curtain calls. Sometimes they would take more than 20 bows! They performed beautiful ballets like Romeo and Juliet together. Their skill and grace made them a legendary pair in the dance world.

He was not just a dancer, but also a creator.

Nureyev was a choreographer, which means he created the dance steps. He made his own versions of famous stories like Swan Lake and Giselle. He also worked with the National Ballet of Canada. He helped many young dancers learn how to perform. From 1983 to 1989, he was the director of the Paris Opera Ballet. He used his skill to lead and teach others.

Nureyev changed how people look at male dancers in ballet. Before him, the focus was often only on the women. He showed that men could be just as important and exciting.
