Michel Fokine was a famous Russian dancer and choreographer. A choreographer is a person who creates the steps and movements for a dance. He is known as the founder of modern ballet. Fokine wanted to change how people saw dance on stage. He believed ballet should show the natural beauty of people. He wanted dance to express real human emotions and themes. Instead of just showing off hard tricks, he wanted movement to tell a story.

Fokine had a very special way of making dances. He often used the whole body to express a feeling. This meant using the arms and the torso more freely. He even changed how dancers used their feet. He thought dancing on the tips of the toes, called pointe, should only be used for certain themes. He did not want dancers to use it just to show strength. In one ballet called Eunice, he wanted dancers to be barefoot. When they said no, he had toes painted on their tights!

Fokine's journey started in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He was born to a wealthy merchant family. At age nine, he entered the Saint Petersburg Imperial Ballet School. He made his first stage appearance in a ballet called The Talisman. By his 18th birthday, he was performing at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre. Fokine was not just a dancer, though. He was also a talented painter. He could also play musical instruments like the mandolin and the balalaika.

Many of his most famous works happened in Paris with the Ballets Russes. In 1910, he helped create a ballet called Scheherazade. This dance was inspired by the tales of 1001 Nights. He also created Petrushka in 1912. This ballet was based on a Russian puppet. It featured many characters like street dancers and even a performing bear. Another famous work was The Dying Swan in 1907. This was a solo dance made for the ballerina Anna Pavlova. He also worked on The Firebird in 1910 with music by Igor Stravinsky.

Fokine's life took him all over the world. The First World War changed his path in 1914. He eventually moved to New York City. In 1921, he started his own ballet school there. He also organized the American Ballet Company in 1924. This group performed at the Metropolitan Opera House. Fokine created more than eighty ballets during his long career. He died in New York in 1942 at the age of 62. To honor him, seventeen ballet companies danced at the same time around the world.
