Lev Ivanov was a famous Russian ballet dancer and choreographer. A choreographer is a person who creates the dance moves for a show. He spent a very long time working with the Imperial Ballet. People still remember him today because of the beautiful dances he made. His work helped define what many people think of as classical ballet. He was a leader in the dance world for many years.

Ivanov learned his craft through many years of hard work and study. He first started at the Moscow School of Dance. In 1844, he moved to Saint Petersburg to study at the Imperial Ballet. He became an official member of the Corps de ballet in 1852. During his training, he learned from several important teachers. These teachers included Jean-Antoine Petipa and Alexandr Pimenov. He also studied with Pierre Frédéric Malavergne and Emile Gredlu.

He is most famous for his work on the ballet Swan Lake. In 1895, he worked with Marius Petipa to restage this famous story. Ivanov choreographed the lake scenes, which are often called the "white acts." This includes the famous Dance of the Little Swans in Act II. In this dance, four small swans huddle together and move in unison. They even break their chain and fall to the floor while trying to fly. He also made the Venetian and Hungarian dances for the third scene.

Ivanov also played a huge role in creating The Nutcracker in 1892. He worked alongside the famous ballet master Marius Petipa on this show. Some history books say Ivanov actually choreographed most of the entire ballet. This might be because Petipa was not feeling well during that time. Even so, Petipa's name was the only one on the original posters. Other famous works by Ivanov include the ballet Cinderella. He also created shows like The Enchanted Forest and The Tulip of Haarlem.

His life in the ballet was full of both success and struggle. He served the Imperial Ballet for fifty years. In his final years, he faced hard times with his money. He asked the Imperial Theatres for help because of his long service. He lived in Moscow and Saint Petersburg during the 1800s. He passed away in Saint Petersburg on December 24, 1901. His many dances continue to be performed by dancers all over the world today.
