She was famous for her incredible skill and her acting. People did not just watch her dance. They felt like she truly became the characters she played. Many people thought her dancing was like magic. Some called her the "elusive soul" of Russian ballet. She helped make ballet a popular art form for everyone. Even people who did not like ballet became its supporters because of her.

Growing up, ballet was part of Galina's life from the start. Her parents were both soloists at the Mariinsky Theatre. Her father later became a director and her mother taught ballet. Because of this, Galina went to ballet school at a very young age. She studied under her own mother and a teacher named Agrippina Vaganova. As a child, she actually dreamed of being a sailor. She was worried that being an artist meant too much hard work and too little sleep.

Galina's career moved through some of the most famous stages in the world. She joined the Mariinsky Theatre in 1928. At first, people noticed her grace and her modest gestures. Later, in 1944, she was moved to the Bolshoi Theatre. There, she served as the prima ballerina assoluta for 16 years. This is a title for a leading dancer. In 1945, she danced the title role in the first performance of Sergei Prokofiev's Cinderella. When she finally toured abroad at age 46, British newspapers were amazed by her talent.

She earned many high honors during her long life. Galina was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR. She was also a Hero of Socialist Labour. She is the only dancer to receive that honor twice. She won the Stalin Prize many times, including in 1941, 1946, and 1947. She also won the Lenin Prize in 1957. In 1960, she became a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. These awards show how much the world respected her work.

After she retired at age 50, Galina continued to help the world of dance. She spent her time coaching many new generations of Russian dancers. She died in Moscow in 1998 at the age of 88. Today, people still find ways to remember her great talent. There are monuments to her in Saint Petersburg and Stockholm. Her old apartment in Moscow is now a memorial museum. You can even see her face on a Russian 3-ruble postage stamp.
