Cinderella (Prokofiev)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cinderella is a famous ballet composed by Sergei Prokofiev. A ballet is a story told through dance and music. This specific piece is known for being very melodic and joyful. It tells the magical tale of a kind young woman. Cinderella lives as a servant for her mean stepmother. A fairy godmother uses magic to help her attend a grand ball. This music is so special that many dancers have performed it.

The story moves through three exciting acts. In the first act, the fairy godmother uses magic to help Cinderella. She calls on the fairies of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. They turn a pumpkin into a carriage and mice into horses. Grasshoppers and dragonflies even become footmen to help her. The magic lasts only until the clock strikes midnight. At the ball, Cinderella and the Prince fall in love. She must flee at midnight, leaving behind one glass slipper.

Prokofiev worked on this music for several years. He composed it between 1940 and 1944. During this time, he also stopped to write an opera called War and Peace. The ballet was based on a scenario by Nikolai Volkov. It had its big premiere on 21 November, 1945. The performance took place at the Bolshoi Theatre. Yuri Fayer conducted the orchestra for this first show. Galina Ulanova played the main role of Cinderella.

A large orchestra plays all the music for the dancers. The group includes many different instruments to make rich sounds. You can hear woodwinds like flutes, oboes, and clarinets. There are also brass instruments like horns and trumpets. The percussion section uses drums, cymbals, and even a tambourine. Special instruments like the harp, piano, and celesta add magic. You might even hear the tinkling sound of a glockenspiel.

This ballet connects many different parts of the art world. It uses music to show different feelings and characters. For example, the stepmother and stepsisters are played as funny characters. The music can be silly or very sweet and romantic. The Prince travels the whole world to find the girl. He searches from the Mediterranean to the Orient to find her. This search shows how much the music and dance matter. It brings people together to celebrate a classic story.
