A ballet is a dance performance set to music. This specific work tells a story from Russian fairy tales. It follows Prince Ivan as he battles an evil king named Koschei.

A magical Firebird helps the prince during his quest. The Firebird is a mysterious and powerful force. This show is important because it brought Russian art to many people. It made the composer, Igor Stravinsky, a global star.

The show uses many different styles of movement to tell its tale.

The Firebird dances in a classical way with exaggerated steps. She might bend deeply at the waist to show her power. In contrast, Koschei and his subjects move in a more violent or strange manner. The princesses dance in a much gentler and looser way. Stravinsky also used special music tricks to help the story. He used techniques like flutter-tonguing and glissando to create unique sounds. These sounds help listeners tell the difference between humans and magic.

This masterpiece began with a group of artists in Russia.

Sergei Diaghilev wanted a new ballet for his company, the Ballets Russes. He wanted something that felt distinctly Russian to show to audiences in Paris. A committee of artists, including Michel Fokine and Alexandre Benois, helped plan the story. They looked at old Russian fairy tales for ideas. They even used lines from a poem by Yakov Polonsky. This teamwork helped create a world that felt both real and magical.

Stravinsky worked very hard to finish the music by May 1910.

He spent about six months writing the score. He even went to rehearsals to help the dancers learn the tricky rhythms. The very first performance happened at the Opéra de Paris on 25 June 1910.

The cast included Tamara Karsavina as the Firebird and Fokine as Prince Ivan. The show was an immediate success with the crowds in Paris. It was much more popular there than it was during its premiere in Russia.

Today, people still enjoy the music of The Firebird in many ways. Stravinsky created three different versions, called suites, of the music. The version from 1919 is the one most people listen to today.

He also made a third version in 1945 with many changes. Many different dance companies have performed the ballet over the years. Some use the original dance moves created by Fokine. Others create entirely new dances using the same beautiful music. It remains a vital part of ballet history.
