This fair is called Maslenitsa, or the Shrovetide Fair. A man called the Charlatan uses a flute to wake the puppets. First, the puppets move their feet while hanging on a wall. Then, they jump out into the middle of the crowd. Petrushka is a puppet made of straw and cloth. He moves in a way that looks wooden and awkward. The Ballerina dances on her toes, which is called en pointe. The Moor is a strong and swashbuckling character.

Igor Stravinsky was the composer who wrote the music. He had a vision of a puppet coming to life. He imagined the puppet making a loud protest with the orchestra. The famous dancer Vaslav Nijinsky played the role of Petrushka.

The ballet first played in Paris on June 13, 1911. It was performed at the Théâtre du Châtelet. Michel Fokine created the original dance moves for the show. Alexandre Benois helped with the story and the colorful sets. These artists worked together to make the show complete.

There are many interesting facts about this famous work. Stravinsky used a special musical sound called the Petrushka chord. This chord uses two different musical ideas at once. It helps the audience hear Petrushka's many emotions. The original orchestra was very large and had many instruments. It included four flutes, four oboes, and four clarinets. There were also many brass instruments like trumpets and trombones. The percussion section had drums, cymbals, and even a xylophone. In 1946, Stravinsky made a newer version for a smaller orchestra.

Petrushka is part of a long tradition of puppet stories. The character of Petrushka is known by many names in Europe. In England, he is called Punch. In France, he is known as Polichinelle. In Italy, people call him Pulcinella. These puppets are often tricksters or rebels in their plays. The story of Petrushka feels timeless to many people. It shows the deep feelings of the human spirit through dance. This is why the ballet remains a great masterpiece today.
