Her family was Jewish and lived in a place called Congress Poland. Her father, Yakov, was a merchant and a publisher of Hebrew books. To avoid military service, her father and uncles changed their last names. Marie eventually chose the French name Marie Rambert. She was one of seven children in her family.

As a child, Marie found it hard to stay still in school. She moved around a lot during her lessons. This restless energy showed she had a true spirit for dance. In 1904, she saw a dancer named Isadora Duncan perform. This performance moved her deeply and sparked her passion. Later, she danced a mazurka at a party with great energy. This lively dance earned her applause and caught the eye of Raymond Duncan.
