A choreographer is someone who creates dance steps for a performance. She was born in New York City in 1905. Her family was very well-connected to the world of theater. Her father and uncle were both famous Hollywood directors. She actually wanted to be an actress when she was young. However, she eventually turned her focus toward the art of dance. She became a leader who changed how people saw dance on stage.

Agnes did not have a typical dancer's body. She was not very flexible and lacked perfect ballet technique. Instead, she learned by watching film stars on movie sets. This helped her focus on acting and character work. She wanted her dances to show how a person felt inside. Her choreography helped tell the story of a play. This was a very new idea for musical theater at the time.

She used movement to show the emotions of the characters.

Her career included many important moments in dance history. In 1940, she created a piece called Black Ritual (Obeah). This dance featured sixteen Black ballerinas. It was a very important milestone for ballet in New York. Later, she created the famous ballet Rodeo in 1942. This work was done for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Her success with Rodeo helped her move into the world of musicals. She became a very famous name on Broadway after that.

One of her biggest successes was the musical Oklahoma! in 1943.

She created a "dream ballet" for this show. This dance was not just a break in the music. It helped the audience understand the main character's emotional troubles. This innovative idea brought her great fame. She won a Tony Award for her work on the musical Brigadoon in 1947. She also won many other awards, like the National Medal of Arts in 1986. She even appeared on a U.S. postage stamp in 2004.

Agnes was also a very busy writer and speaker. She wrote many books, including her memoir Dance to the Piper. She spent 30 years writing a biography about the dancer Martha Graham. Agnes also loved to speak in front of the government. She spoke to Congress three times to support dance in America. She even served on national committees to help the arts. She lived in New York and died there in 1993. Her work continues to influence how we watch musicals today.
