A choreographer is someone who creates new dances for others to perform. Tharp is well known for mixing different styles of movement together. She often combines classical ballet with modern dance styles. People call this a "crossover ballet." Her work is very special because she uses many types of music. She might use classical music, jazz, or even contemporary pop music to set the mood for her dancers.

Tharp has many famous dances that people still love today. In 1973, she created a dance called Deuce Coupe for the Joffrey Ballet. This dance used the music of The Beach Boys. It was considered the first crossover ballet ever made. Later, in 1976, she made Push Comes to Shove. This dance featured the famous dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. Many people believe this is the best example of a crossover ballet. Her dances have been performed by many big groups like the Paris Opera Ballet and the New York City Ballet.

Tharp also makes very successful shows for the Broadway stage. One of her most famous works is a musical called Movin' Out. This show uses the songs of Billy Joel. It was a huge success and ran for 1,331 performances on Broadway. Tharp even won a Tony Award for Best Choreographer for this show. She also created a show called The Times They Are a-Changin' using Bob Dylan's music. Another show, Come Fly Away, used the songs of Frank Sinatra. These shows show how she can turn popular music into beautiful dance.

Twyla Tharp's career began a long time ago. She was born on July 1, 1941, on a farm in Indiana. She moved to California when she was a child. Later, she moved to New York City to study dance. In 1965, she started her own group called Twyla Tharp Dance. Her company traveled all over the world to perform her original dances. In 1988, her company merged with the American Ballet Theatre. She has worked with many famous dancers and directors throughout her long life.

Besides dancing, Tharp is also a very talented writer. She has written four different books about her life and her work. One of her books is called The Creative Habit. This book explains how to use good habits to help make art. She even uses a special exercise called the "Coin Drop" to help her think. This involves looking at random coins on a flat surface to find patterns. Tharp shows us that being an artist is about much more than just moving your body; it is about how you think and learn every day.
