Pina Bausch was a famous German dancer and choreographer. She helped create a special style called Tanztheater, or dance theatre.

This style mixes dance with music and big stage sets. Her work was very different from traditional ballet. Instead of telling a simple story, her shows explored deep feelings. She often used repeating movements to show these emotions. She believed that doing the same thing twice could make you feel something new. Her unique ideas changed the world of modern dance forever.

Making a show was a special process for Bausch. She did not just tell her dancers what to do. Instead, she worked with them to develop the pieces. Her shows used many different parts like sound and scenery. Sometimes the stage sets were part of nature. In a piece called The Rite of Spring, the stage was covered in soil.

In another show called Vollmond, dancers had to climb a large rock. In Nelken, the floor was covered in carnations. These sets were not just for looking at. They were obstacles that challenged the dancers during the performance.

Pina Bausch was born in Solingen, Germany, in 1940. Her parents owned a restaurant with guest rooms. As a young girl, she danced for the guests in the restaurant. Sometimes she even danced in their rooms while they read. This early experience helped her find her talent. She studied at the Folkwangschule in Essen starting in 1955. Later, she went to the Juilliard School in New York City. There, she learned from many famous dance teachers like Paul Taylor. She also performed with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet Company.

In 1973, Bausch became the director of the Wuppertal ballet. She renamed it the Tanztheater Wuppertal. This company travels all over the world today. Her career had many high points and some hard times. At first, some people in Wuppertal did not like her work. They were used to old ballets like Swan Lake. They found her movements too intense and even threw tomatoes. However, she went on to win many great awards. She won the German Dance Prize in 1995. She also won the Kyoto Prize in 2007.

Bausch's ideas still reach people in many ways today. Her work influenced famous musicians like David Bowie. He used her style to help design his Glass Spider Tour. The singer Florence Welch also says Bausch is a huge influence. Even movies have been inspired by her unique style. In 2009, a director made a 3D film about her life called Pina.
