Robert Joffrey was a very important man in the world of dance. He was a dancer, a teacher, and a maker of dances called a choreographer. He also helped start a famous group called the Joffrey Ballet. Joffrey loved to create new and imaginative shows for people to watch. He wanted his dancers to move in ways that felt fresh and exciting. His work helped change how people think about dance today.

Joffrey had a special way of making his dances. He studied both ballet and modern dance. Ballet is a very precise and graceful style of dance. Modern dance uses more movement on the floor and shows deep feelings. Joffrey mixed these two styles together into one new way of moving. This blend of grace and emotion is very common in dance now. He used this skill to make many unique performances.

His journey began in Seattle, Washington, in 1930. He was born to a father from Afghanistan and a mother from Italy. When he was nine, he started dancing to help with his asthma. Later, he moved to New York City to study even more. In 1949, he performed with a famous group in Paris. By 1954, he started his own dance company.

Joffrey's company traveled to many different places. In 1956, six dancers drove a station wagon across the country. They performed twenty-three shows in eleven different states. Soon, they traveled to India, the Middle East, and the Soviet Union. They even performed at the White House. His company moved from New York to Los Angeles and then to Chicago.

Joffrey also changed how dancers worked together in a group. Most ballet companies use a strict ranking system for their dancers. Joffrey chose to use an ensemble instead. This meant dancers could easily switch between leading roles. This helped the whole group feel more united and strong. He died in New York City in 1988 from AIDS. His legacy lives on through the many dancers he inspired.
