He was a French man who led many dance groups. He was known for modern ballet that explored very big ideas. He also worked as an opera director. People loved his work because it was new and exciting. He made dance feel very powerful and full of meaning. This helped him become one of the most important artists of his time.

Béjart had a very busy way of working with dance. He often created new shows called choreographies. One famous example is his work for the music "Boléro."

In this dance, a performer stands on a tabletop. Other dancers sit around the table and slowly join in. It ends with all the dancers together on top of the table. He also made a new version of The Nutcracker in 2000. This version used the same music but told a different story. It was about a boy trying to connect with his mother.

His journey into dance started a long time ago. He was born in Marseille, France, in 1927. His father was a philosopher named Gaston Berger. After seeing a dance recital, Maurice decided to follow that path. He studied with many famous teachers in France and London. He joined the Opéra de Marseille as a dancer in 1945. Later, he started his own groups like the Ballet de l'Étoile in 1954. He also founded the Ballet du XXe Siècle in Brussels in 1960.

Béjart traveled to many places with his dance groups. In 1973, he went to Iran for the Shiraz-Persepolis Festival of Arts.

He even opened dance schools in Brussels and Dakar, Africa. He taught many people how to dance in these different lands.

His hard work earned him many special honors. He won the Erasmus Prize in 1974. In 1994, he was named to the Académie des Beaux Arts. He also received the Prix Benois de la Danse for his life of dance.
