August Bournonville was a famous dance maker from Denmark.

His father was also a dance teacher. August started dance school when he was eight years old. He was very talented. He could sing and play the violin too.

As a young man, August went to Paris. He studied with a great teacher named Auguste Vestris. This teacher helped him with his balance and arm moves.

When he came home, August made his own style of dance. We call this the Bournonville School. He made more than 50 ballets. These dances were light and beautiful. His works had many settings. Some were in Italy or Russia. Others were in South America.

August was special because he gave men and women equal parts. Many other dance makers focused only on women. His dances show a balanced way of being human.

His most famous dances are La Sylphide and Napoli. People in the United States still watch his work today.
