He began his dance training at age nine. By age eighteen, he joined the Royal Danish Ballet. He soon became a soloist. This is the highest level for a dancer in that group.

Erik was known for his great skill. He could leap with grace. He could turn with cat-like speed. He also used his whole body to show deep feelings. He believed that technique was not enough. To him, dance was about being the character. He wanted to be part of the story.

He danced in many famous ballets. These included Swan Lake and Giselle. He also performed in Romeo and Juliet. Erik worked with many different dance partners. He wanted to change his style to match them. He believed a good team brings out the best in each person.

Later, Erik became a leader for dance groups. He led the Swedish Opera Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada. He was also a wonderful teacher. He died in 1986 from lung cancer. People still honor him with the Erik Bruhn Prize for great dancers.
