It mixes classical ballet with modern dance. In old ballet, dancers must follow very strict rules. They keep their bodies in set lines. Contemporary ballet is more free. Dancers can move their upper bodies in new ways. They may even turn their legs inward.

Many people helped make this style. Serge Diaghilev wanted to mix all kinds of art. He brought music and painting to the stage. George Balanchine was a famous pioneer too. He made a style called neoclassical ballet. He used different clothes like tunics or leotards. He also used soft tutus.

Dancers must train very hard. They learn classical ballet first. Then they study modern dance to become versatile. They might do yoga or Pilates to stay limber.
