Composers wanted to bring back order and balance. They felt earlier music was too wild or messy. They wanted sounds that were clear and calm. This style is often called a "call to order."

Many makers looked back to the past for ideas. They used tunes from the eighteenth century. Some even used music from the Baroque period. This can be called neo-Baroque music. They used smaller groups of players. They also focused on steady rhythms and patterns.

Igor Stravinsky was a very famous composer in this style. He was born in Russia but lived in France. He made music that felt new but used old ways. His ballet *Pulcinella* is a great example. He also wrote works like the *Symphony of Psalms*.

Other people helped spread this music. A teacher named Nadia Boulanger taught over 600 musicians. Her students lived in many places. They made music in America, Spain, and Brazil. In Germany, Paul Hindemith made a different kind of neoclassical music. He used many layers of sound. It was a way to make music feel strong and beautiful.
