Some people make music in a very special way. This method is called serialism.

It uses a set of items in a fixed order. This order is often called a row.

One type is the twelve-tone technique. This uses all twelve notes in a scale. The notes form a row to help the music stay together. This helps with the melody and the harmony. Arnold Schoenberg was a famous composer who used this method.

Other composers went even further. They used rows for more than just notes. They used them for how loud a sound is. They also used them for how long a note lasts. This is called total serialism. It can also be used for the tone of an instrument.

Many famous people used these ideas. This includes Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Some jazz and rock musicians used it too. Even the singer Frank Zappa used these tools. Serialism is not just for music. People also use it in art and books. It is a way to find order in new sounds.
