Serialism

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Serialism is a very special way that people make music. It is a method of composition that uses a series of musical parts. Instead of just playing notes, a composer might use a set order for many things. These things can be the pitch of a note or how loud it is. They can also be the rhythm or the sound of the instrument.

Some people even see it as a way to relate the human mind to the world. It helps a creator find a sense of completeness in their work.

One famous way to use this is called the twelve-tone technique. In this method, a composer uses all twelve notes of a scale. They put these notes in a specific order called a row. This row acts as a foundation for the whole piece of music. It helps decide the melody, the harmony, and how the music moves.

A composer can build this row before they start writing. They might also make the row up while they are working.

This way of making music began a long time ago. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, composers wanted to try new things. They wanted to move away from the old ways of using chords. Arnold Schoenberg was a very important person in this movement. He helped create the twelve-tone technique in the 1920s. Later, in the 1930s, many composers moved from Europe to the United States. This helped spread these new musical ideas to different parts of the world.

After World War II, serialism became very popular again. Some composers wanted to use rows for every single part of a song. This is called total serialism or integral serialism. They used series for how long a note lasts and how loud it is. Milton Babbitt was one of the first to use this in the late 1940s. Other famous names include Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Even some jazz and rock musicians used these ideas. For example, the rock musician Frank Zappa used these tools in his music.

Serialism is not just for people who write classical music. These ideas about using orders and sets can be found in other places too. You can find serialism in the visual arts and in design. Some people even use these patterns in architecture or in books. It is a way to bring order to many different parts. Whether it is a painting or a song, it helps everything fit together. It shows how math and patterns can make beautiful things.
