Milton Babbitt was a famous maker of music. He was also a teacher and a math expert. He was born in 1916. As a young boy, he played the violin. He also played the clarinet and the saxophone. He loved to write songs. At age seven, he made his own tunes. He even won a songwriting contest when he was thirteen.

Later, he studied music at New York University. He became interested in a special way to write music. This is called twelve-tone music. It uses all twelve notes in a set. Babbitt found new ways to use these notes. He even organized the rhythm and volume of the sounds.

In 1960, he began to use electronic music. He worked with a machine called the RCA Mark II Synthesizer.

This machine helped him make very precise sounds. He often mixed these machine sounds with real instruments.

Babbitt taught many students at Princeton and Juilliard. One of his students was Stephen Sondheim. Babbitt won many big prizes. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his life's work. He also won a MacArthur Fellowship. He lived to be 94 years old.
