Elliott Carter was a famous American composer. He was born in New York City in 1908. He loved to make new kinds of music.

He studied music in the US and in France. He learned from many great teachers.

Carter had a very special style. He did not want his music to sound like a horse trotting. He wanted it to sound like a fast car. He used many different rhythms at once. This made his music sound busy and exciting. He often gave each instrument its own speed.

He wrote music for many groups. He wrote for big orchestras and small groups. He also wrote music for singers. He even wrote one opera, called What Next?. He used many different notes to make his sounds. He even made a special Harmony Book to help him.

Carter won many big prizes. He won the Pulitzer Prize twice for his string quartets. These are pieces for four string instruments. He was very hard working. He wrote music every morning. He kept writing even after he turned 100 years old.
