Barber was a child prodigy. This means he was very good at music at a young age. He began piano lessons at age six. At age ten, he wrote his first operetta. He studied at the Curtis Institute for ten years. He loved writing music for the human voice. Two-thirds of his work was for singers. One of his most famous pieces is Adagio for Strings. A great conductor called it "simple and beautiful." Barber won the Pulitzer Prize for Music two times. He won it for his opera Vanessa and for a piece for piano and orchestra. He lived with his partner, Gian Carlo Menotti, for over 40 years. They were close friends until Barber died in 1981.
