Samuel Barber was a celebrated American composer during the mid-20th century. He was a person of many musical talents. He worked as a pianist, a conductor, and a baritone singer. His music was loved in Europe and the Americas. People often performed his works in concerts around the world. He was known for a style that felt very lyrical. This means his music often sounded like a beautiful song. He preferred traditional musical sounds over more experimental styles.

Barber's music often focused on the human voice. He spent much of his life writing for singers. In fact, two-thirds of his music was for voices. This included art songs for a single singer and choral music for groups. He wrote songs like "Sure on this shining night." He also wrote a set called "Hermit Songs." These songs used old texts from Irish monks. His own time as a professional singer helped him understand voices. This gave him a special way to write for them.

His musical journey began very early in Pennsylvania. He was a child prodigy with great natural talent. Barber started piano lessons when he was only six years old. By age seven, he composed his first piece called "Sadness." At age ten, he wrote an operetta titled "The Rose Tree." He later studied at the Curtis Institute for ten years. He studied many things there, including piano and composition. He also learned how to conduct and sing. His uncle, Sidney Homer, mentored him for over 25 years.

Barber achieved many great honors during his career. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Music two separate times. He won once for his opera "Vanessa" in 1957. He won a second time for his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra" in 1962. His famous piece "Adagio for Strings" is still played often today. A famous conductor named Arturo Toscanini called it "simple and beautiful." Many famous orchestras played his music. These included the Boston Symphony and the New York Philharmonic.

They often hosted many famous musicians at their home. Menotti even helped write the words for two of Barber's operas. Even after their relationship ended, they stayed close friends. Barber passed away from cancer in 1981. By that time, nearly all of his music had been recorded for people to hear.
