Schnittke studied music in Vienna. He loved the music of Mozart and Schubert. Later, his music changed. He wrote pieces for the piano and strings. He also wrote for large groups called orchestras. In his later years, his music became more quiet and bleak. This happened as his health got worse. He had several strokes. One stroke in 1994 left him almost paralyzed. He still tried to write music with his left hand. He died in Germany in 1998. People still play his music today. His work shows the deep feelings of people.
