Oliver Knussen was a famous British composer and conductor. A composer is someone who writes music. A conductor is someone who leads a group of musicians. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland. His father played the double bass in a big orchestra.

Oliver began writing music when he was only six. At age 15, he led his first big musical show. This was his first symphony, which is a long piece for an orchestra. He was very good at making music sound colorful. He also wrote operas for children. These were based on books by Maurice Sendak. Two of them were called "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Higglety Pigglety Pop!".

Music was a big part of his family life. His wife, Sue, worked with music on television. When Sue died from a blood infection, Oliver wrote a special piece. He called it "Songs for Sue." It was a tribute to her. He also had a daughter named Sonya. She is a singer called a mezzo-soprano. Oliver died in 2018 at age 66. His music is still enjoyed by many people today.
