Darius Milhaud was a famous French composer. He made many kinds of music. He was also a teacher and a conductor. He began his life playing the violin. Later, he focused on writing music. He was a member of a group called Les Six. This was a group of six composers.

His music used many different sounds. He loved the sound of jazz. He also loved music from Brazil. While in Brazil, he worked with a poet named Paul Claudel. He wrote music for many of the poet's plays. One of his pieces is called "The Ox on the Roof." This music sounds like a big Brazilian party. He also wrote a set of dances called "Saudades do Brasil." These dances sound like different parts of Rio de Janeiro.

In 1922, he visited the United States. He heard real jazz in Harlem. This changed his music forever. He wrote a ballet called "The Creation of the World." It used many ideas from jazz music. Because of war, he had to move to the U.S. for safety. He taught music at Mills College in California. He taught many great musicians. One famous student was Dave Brubeck.
