Darius Milhaud was a famous French composer and teacher. He was a very busy creator who wrote around 450 pieces of music. He was also a conductor and a member of a group called Les Six. His music is known for being very unique and modern. He often used a style called polytonality, which means using different keys at once. This made his songs sound very interesting to listeners.

Milhaud's music was inspired by many different sounds. He loved the energy of Brazilian music and the rhythm of jazz. In Brazil, he worked with a poet named Paul Claudel. They worked together on a ballet called L'Homme et son désir. He also wrote a piece called Le Bœuf sur le toit. This song uses melodies from Brazilian composers like Ernesto Nazareth. It even sounds like a big Carnaval party.

His journey as a musician started in France. He was born in Marseille in 1892. He grew up in a city called Aix-en-Provence. His family had Jewish roots in that area for a long time. He began his career playing the violin. Later, he studied at the Paris Conservatory. There, he learned how to write complex music from teachers like Charles-Marie Widor.

In 1922, Milhaud traveled to the United States. He visited Harlem and heard real jazz for the first time. This experience changed the way he wrote music. In 1923, he finished a ballet called La création du monde. This work used many jazz ideas. Later, he had to move to the U.S. because of the war in Europe. He found a teaching job at Mills College in California.

Milhaud was a wonderful teacher to many famous musicians. One of his most well-known students was the jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. Milhaud also taught people like Burt Bacharach and Philip Glass. He told his students to write melodies that people could whistle. He taught at many places, including the Aspen Music Festival. He passed away in Geneva at the age of 81. He was buried in his home city of Aix-en-Provence.
