She lived a life filled with music and helped shape how people heard it. While she wrote her own music, she is most remembered for teaching. She guided many of the most important musicians of the twentieth century. Her students included over 250 people like Aaron Copland and Philip Glass. She also led large orchestras as a conductor. She was the first woman to lead many major groups in America and Europe. These included the Boston Symphony and the BBC Symphony orchestras.

Nadia grew up in a home where music was everywhere. Her father, Ernest Boulanger, was a well-known composer and teacher. Her sister, Lili Boulanger, also became a famous composer. When Nadia was very young, she actually hid from music. She would get upset by the sounds and hide until they stopped. Everything changed when she was five years old. One day, she heard a fire bell ringing. Instead of hiding, she ran to the piano to copy the sound.

This moment showed her new love for making music.

Nadia worked very hard to learn her craft. She entered the Conservatoire de Paris when she was only nine. She studied many different parts of music, like harmony and organ. In 1903, she won the school's first prize in harmony. She also won prizes for organ and composition in 1904. Even though she was a great musician, she decided to focus on teaching. She felt she lacked the talent to be a great composer like her father. She began teaching from her family apartment on rue Ballu in 1904. She even started a special group class held every Wednesday afternoon.

Her life had some very difficult and sad times too. During World War I, Nadia and Lili organized a charity. They helped soldiers who used to be musicians by providing food and clothes. Sadly, her sister Lili died in March 1918. Nadia felt a lot of grief after losing her sister. She worked very hard to honor Lili's memory. She even kept a special shrine for her in their home.

Later, Nadia helped teach at the French Music School for Americans in Fontainebleau. This school helped many students from different countries learn music.

Nadia's influence can still be heard in music today. She taught students in many places, including the United States and the United Kingdom. She worked with famous schools like the Juilliard School. Many of the conductors and soloists we hear today were her students. She also became close friends with the composer Igor Stravinsky. She helped many people discover their own musical genius. Nadia spent most of her career teaching in her family flat in Paris. She continued her work for seven decades until she died at age 92. Her life shows how one teacher can change the world of art.
