Pierre Monteux was a famous conductor who led orchestras around the world.

A conductor uses a baton to guide many musicians at once. Monteux was born in Paris in 1875. He was the third son in a family of six children. His mother was a piano teacher, so music was part of his life. He began taking violin lessons when he was only six years old.

By age nine, he was studying at the famous Paris Conservatoire. He learned many skills there, including composition and music theory. He even shared first prize for violin in a big competition in 1896.

Before he led large orchestras, Monteux worked as a player. He played the violin and also the viola, which is a larger string instrument.

He was a member of the Geloso Quartet for many years. He even played chamber music for the famous composer Edvard Grieg. In his youth, he played popular dance music at the Folies Bergère. He said this helped him learn a strong sense of rhythm. He also played in the orchestra for the Concerts Colonne. This gave him a special link to the music of Berlioz.

Monteux became a star conductor through his work with the Ballets Russes.

This was a famous ballet company led by Sergei Diaghilev. In 1911, he led the very first performance of Petrushka. This was a new work by the composer Igor Stravinsky. Stravinsky was so impressed that he asked Monteux to lead the premiere. Monteux also conducted the world premiere of The Rite of Spring. He led many other important pieces, including works by Ravel and Debussy. His skill helped make these new musical works famous.

His career took him to many great cities and stages.

Between 1917 and 1919, he worked at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He later led the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1919 to 1924. He also directed the San Francisco Symphony for many years. Even at eighty-six years old, he was still working hard. In 1961, he became the chief conductor for the London Symphony Orchestra. He held this important job until he passed away three years later. He loved many kinds of music, especially the works of Brahms.

Monteux also cared deeply about teaching the next generation.

He started a conducting class in Paris in 1932. Later, he moved to the United States and became an American citizen. In Maine, he founded a special school for musicians and conductors. Many of his students, like Seiji Ozawa and André Previn, became famous leaders. The school in Hancock has continued to help musicians even after he died. His life shows how one person can share music with the whole world.
