He wrote many different kinds of music for people to hear. This included 15 operas, 14 ballets, and 6 symphonies. He also wrote music for small groups and for singers. People love his music because it sounds fresh and new. He often mixed modern ideas with songs from his own home. This made his music feel special and full of life.

To make his music, Martinů used many different styles. In Paris, he tried using jazz sounds and new rhythms. He liked music that sounded like fast cars or sports. Later, he used a style called neoclassicism. This style uses clear and steady musical patterns. He often used melodies from Czech folk songs and nursery rhymes. One famous example is his ballet called Špalíček. He would listen to these tunes and turn them into big orchestral pieces.

Martinů had a very unusual start in life. He was born in the tower of a church in Polička. His father was a shoemaker and a fire watchman for the town. Because of his father's job, the family lived in an apartment in the tower. As a small boy, Martinů was often sickly. He had to be carried up 193 steps to reach his home. Even so, he became a very talented violinist. He gave his first big concert in his hometown in 1905.

His life changed a lot as he moved to new places. In 1923, he moved to Paris to study new ways of making music. He met a conductor named Serge Koussevitzky in a café. This meeting helped him show his music to big orchestras. Later, he had to leave France because of a war. In 1941, he moved to the United States to find safety. He lived in New York and later in a quiet place called Queens.

Many people compare his music to other famous makers like Bartók. This is because he used folk songs from his roots. Even when he lived far away, he kept his home traditions in his songs. In America, his six symphonies were played by many big orchestras. He worked on his music in his head during long night walks. This helped him stay creative even in a noisy new world. His music remains a big part of history today.
