His massive body of work includes 6 symphonies and 15 operas. He also composed 14 ballet scores and many pieces for orchestras and singers. Martinů is celebrated for his ability to blend modern musical styles with his Czech roots. He used melodies from Bohemian and Moravian folk traditions to create something unique. This helped him stand out among the great composers of the 20th century.

Martinů's musical process changed significantly as he moved through different cities. In his youth, he focused on the violin and studied under Josef Suk. When he moved to Paris in 1923, he moved away from the Romantic style. He began experimenting with French stylistic developments and jazz idioms. He often used rhythms that felt like the industrial revolution or motorized transportation. Later, he settled into neoclassicism, a style that uses clear and structured musical patterns. His neoclassic textures were often much denser than those of other composers of that era.

His career can be divided into several distinct musical stages. During his early years in Prague, he worked as a violinist in the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. His time in Paris was a period of intense experimentation with surrealism and jazz. One famous example is his ballet, Špalíček, which uses Czech nursery rhymes. In the 1930s, he reached a peak of neoclassicism with works like his Concerto Grosso. Finally, his American period saw the creation of his six major symphonies. These symphonies were performed by all the major orchestras in the United States.

Martinů's life began in a very unusual setting in the town of Polička. He was born in the tower apartment of the St. Jakub Church. His father worked as a shoemaker, a church sexton, and a town fire watchman. Because he was a sickly child, Martinů was often carried up 193 steps to his home. Despite his health, he became a skilled violinist by age 15. He attended the Prague Conservatory, though he struggled with the rigid teaching methods there. He was actually dismissed from the violin program for negligence before moving to the organ department.

World War II forced Martinů to change his life and his music. After the German invasion of France, he and his wife, Charlotte, had to flee. They traveled through France and eventually reached the United States in 1941. This journey was made possible by friends and a benefactor named Paul Sacher. During the war, he composed the Field Mass as a tribute to the Czech resistance. This piece was broadcast in occupied Czechoslovakia, leading the Nazis to blacklist him. Even in difficult times, he found inspiration, such as the fountains in Aix-en-Provence.

In the United States, Martinů faced the challenges of being an immigrant. He struggled with a lack of money and did not know English well. He initially lived in a noisy hotel in Manhattan, which made composing difficult. To find peace, he moved to Jamaica Estates in Queens. This quiet neighborhood allowed him to take long walks at night. During these walks, he would work out complex musical scores entirely in his head.

This mental process allowed him to remain highly productive despite his surroundings.

Martinů's legacy is defined by his innovative and diverse musical language. He is often compared to other famous composers like Béla Bartók and Sergei Prokofiev. This comparison is due to how he incorporated folk elements into modern music. His works, such as the Double Concerto for Two String Orchestras, Piano and Timpani, remain highly regarded. He lived a life of constant movement between Europe and America. He eventually died in Switzerland in August 1959, leaving behind a rich musical history.
