His compositions often drew from local legends and landscapes. This connection made his music a symbol of national pride.

Smetana's musical journey began with a natural talent. He gave his first public performance at age six.

He played a piano arrangement of an overture in Litomyšl. His parents were both musical in their own ways. His father played the violin in a string quartet. His mother was a professional dancer.

These early influences helped shape his deep understanding of rhythm and melody.

His education involved several different schools and cities. He studied at a gymnasium in Jihlava and later in Německý Brod. He eventually enrolled at Prague's Academic Grammar School. There, he studied under the poet Josef Jungmann. Jungmann was a leader in the Czech national revival movement.

Smetana also studied music under Josef Proksch in Prague. Proksch was the head of the Prague Music Institute. Through Proksch, Smetana was introduced to famous composers like Franz Liszt and Hector Berlioz.

Smetana's early career was marked by political and financial struggle. In 1848, he participated in the Prague uprising.

He joined a Citizens' Army called Svornost. He even helped man the barricades on the Charles Bridge. Following this, he faced difficulty establishing a career in Prague. He moved to Sweden to work as a teacher and choirmaster in Gothenburg.

He also became the theatre's principal conductor that same year. However, his leadership was met with significant controversy. Some musicians felt his progressive ideas were a threat to traditional styles. This professional opposition contributed to a decline in his health.

Smetana faced profound personal challenges later in life. By the end of 1874, he had become completely deaf.

Despite this loss, he entered a period of sustained composition. He continued to write music for nearly the rest of his life. Sadly, a mental collapse occurred in early 1884. This led to his incarceration in an asylum and his subsequent death. His legacy remains central to the musical history of his nation.

His most famous works are still performed today. The symphonic cycle Má vlast, or "My Fatherland," is a masterpiece. It portrays the history and legends of Bohemia. A key part of this cycle is the symphonic poem "Vltava."
