In Gothenburg, he began to write much larger pieces for an orchestra. Eventually, the political climate in Bohemia changed. This encouraged him to return to Prague permanently to join the musical life there.

In 1866, his opera The Bartered Bride premiered at the Provisional Theatre. This work became extremely popular with the people. That same year, he became the principal conductor at the theatre.

However, his time as a conductor was sometimes difficult. Some people in the music world disagreed with his new ideas. These arguments were hard on him and affected his health. He eventually had to resign from his job at the theatre in 1874.
