He was also a piano teacher and a piano maker. People in the 1800s saw him as a musical giant. He was known for his very special touch on the keys. His playing sounded calm and even to those who heard him. He was one of the few musicians who became very wealthy. This success came from his music and his many different jobs.

Kalkbrenner had a very busy way of working. He wrote over 200 pieces of music just for the piano. He also wrote many operas and piano concertos. He even made special versions of Beethoven's nine symphonies for solo piano. To help students, he used a tool called a chiroplast. This was a wooden guide that sat on the piano. It helped new players keep their hands in the right position. This tool helped him earn a lot of money.

His musical journey began in Germany. He was born in 1785 during a trip from Kassel to Berlin. His father was his very first music teacher. By the age of six, he played a concerto for the Queen of Prussia. When he was only eight, he could speak four languages fluently. Later, he moved to Paris to study at the Conservatoire de Paris. He won first prize for piano there in 1800. He also studied in Vienna with famous teachers like Antonio Salieri.

Kalkbrenner lived in many important cities. He spent time in Berlin, Munich, and Stuttgart as a performer. From 1814 to 1823, he lived in England to teach and play concerts. He later returned to Paris as a rich man. In Paris, he became a partner in the Pleyel piano factory. This factory was one of the most famous in the world. He ran a school that people called a "factory for aspiring virtuosos." Students traveled from far away, even from Cuba, to learn from him.

Many famous musicians were linked to his life. The great composer Frédéric Chopin once met him in Paris. Chopin thought Kalkbrenner's playing was perfect in its own style. Chopin even dedicated his first piano concerto to him. Kalkbrenner taught many students like Marie Pleyel and Camille Saint-Saëns. His teaching methods were passed down through many years. Even though other stars like Liszt became more famous later, Kalkbrenner's influence stayed strong. He died in 1849 from cholera in Enghien-les-Bains.
