Learning to play the piano was a big part of Czerny's life. He was a child prodigy who started playing at age three. By age seven, he was already writing his own music. His father was his very first teacher. His father taught him the music of Bach, Haydn, and Mozart. Czerny even performed in public when he was only ten years old. He played a Mozart concerto in the year 1800. He later became a master at playing difficult scales and trills. His music helped students learn how to play with speed and accuracy.

Czerny had many famous teachers and students. He was one of the best-known pupils of Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven was very impressed by the young Czerny. Czerny even helped Beethoven by playing his piano concertos. Later, Czerny became a star teacher himself. He taught many lessons every single day in Vienna. His most famous student was a boy named Franz Liszt.

Even though Liszt was a very messy player at first, Czerny saw his great talent. He even taught the young Liszt for free because he was so impressed.

Czerny's musical life was full of many different kinds of works. He wrote piano studies like "The School of Velocity." These books help students practice their finger movements. He also wrote symphonies, operas, and songs. Some of his music was for many instruments playing together. He even wrote pieces that used themes from other famous composers. He wrote variations on themes by Mozart and Beethoven. He also wrote religious music because he was a devout Catholic. These works show how much he loved all kinds of sound.

Czerny's influence can still be felt by piano players today. Many famous musicians can trace their training back to him. This is often shown in a musical "heritage tree." For example, the great player Sergei Rachmaninoff learned from people who learned from Liszt. Since Liszt was a student of Czerny, the connection continues.
