Franz Schubert wrote a famous series of eight piano pieces called Impromptus.

These pieces were all composed in 1827. They are some of the most important examples of this musical style. An Impromptu is a type of music meant for a solo piano player. People love these pieces because they show so much skill. They can be calm or very fast and exciting.

Many musicians record them to share their beauty with the world.

The music works in many different ways. In the first set, the first piece uses several musical structures. The second piece is a swift "moto perpetuo," which means it has constant motion. The third piece is very meditative with long, flowing melodies. The fourth piece uses cascading arpeggios, which are notes that ripple like water.

In the second set, the pieces change styles again. One follows a sonata form, while another is a minuet, a type of dance. The final piece in that set is very hard to play and requires great skill.

Schubert created these works during a busy time in his life. He was influenced by the music of Jan Václav Voříšek and Václav Tomášek.

The first set of four was published in parts. Two were released during Schubert's life as Op. 90. The other two were printed much later in 1857. The second set, known as Op. 142, was published after he died in 1839. This set was dedicated to the famous musician Franz Liszt.

There are many specific details about these musical collections. The first set is catalogued as D. 899. The second set is known as D. 935.

Schubert also wrote three more pieces called Drei Klavierstücke, or "Three Piano Pieces." He wrote these in May 1828, just six months before he died. These are catalogued as D. 946. While the other sets are famous, these three are often neglected. They were first published in 1868 by the editor Johannes Brahms.

You might hear Schubert's music in movies or even rock songs.

The film Barry Lyndon used his first Impromptu in 1975. The rock group Manfred Mann's Earth Band used a theme from his G major piece. In the movie Gattaca, a pianist plays an arrangement of the third piece. Even in books, like The Finkler Question, his music is mentioned. These connections show how his piano music still touches our lives today.
