Franz Schubert wrote a special piece of music called the String Quintet in C major.

Many people call it the "Cello Quintet." This is because of how the group is set up. Most groups of five string players use two violas. Schubert chose to use two cellos instead. This choice makes the sound feel very rich and deep. This piece is considered one of the greatest works in chamber music. It is a masterpiece that people still love today.

The music is organized into four distinct parts called movements. The first movement is very long and expansive. It can take up more than one third of the whole piece. The second movement is an Adagio, which means it is played slowly. It has a calm feeling, but the middle part becomes very turbulent. The third movement is a Scherzo, which is a lively and playful part. Finally, the fourth movement is an Allegretto. This part is fast and exuberant. It even uses styles from Hungarian music.

Schubert wrote this music in the summer or early autumn of 1828. He finished the work in late September or early October. This was only two months before he died in November 1828. Because he finished it so close to his death, some listeners feel it sounds like a final goodbye. Schubert had already written many other pieces for strings before this. He often played music with his family's string quartet at home. This quintet was the only full-fledged string quintet he ever wrote.

Even though he finished it in 1828, the world did not hear it right away. Schubert's brother, Ferdinand, sold the manuscript to a publisher named Diabelli. The music was neglected for a long time. It was not published until 1853, which was twenty-five years later. The first public performance happened in 1850 at the Musikverein in Vienna. This was three years before the music was printed. The original sketches and manuscripts from Schubert are now lost.

This music has left a huge mark on other famous composers. The composer Johannes Brahms was an early admirer of this work. He was even inspired to write his own Piano Quintet because of it. Many people find the music useful for movies today. The calm second movement is often used for quiet or thoughtful scenes. Some musicians have even used parts of the music on their tombstones. It remains a very important part of musical history.
