It is a beautiful melody that many people love to hear. People often sing it at very special times in life. It is played at weddings and also at funerals. Some people even use it for Christmas or holiday music. This song matters because it connects a story to a powerful prayer.

Schubert wrote this music in 1825. It was part of a group of seven songs called Opus 52. These songs were based on a poem by Walter Scott. The poem is titled *The Lady of the Lake*.

The songs were written to be sung in German. Schubert used a German translation of the poem by Adam Storck. This was a hard job because the translation was quite free. He had to make the words fit his melody perfectly.

The song tells a specific part of a story. In the poem, a character named Ellen Douglas is in the Scottish Highlands. She is staying in a cave with her father. While she is there, she sings a prayer to the Virgin Mary. She asks for help and protection. A leader named Roderick Dhu hears her singing from a distance. He hears the music and then goes on to battle.

Many people call the piece "Ave Maria" today. This name comes from the Latin words for "Hail Mary." These are the first words of Ellen's song. Because of this, many singers use the full Latin prayer instead. They often use different lyrics than the ones Schubert originally wrote. The famous piano player Franz Liszt even made three different versions for the piano. This shows how much people enjoy playing the melody.

You might recognize this music from the movie *Fantasia*.

Walt Disney used the song in his 1940 film. In the movie, the music follows a piece called *Night on Bald Mountain*. A conductor named Leopold Stokowski arranged the music for the film. It uses a soprano singer and a large choir. It also uses the string section of the Philadelphia Orchestra. This helped make the song a part of movie history.
