Annunzio Paolo Mantovani was a famous music leader. He was born in Venice, Italy, in 1905. His father was a violin player. Mantovani later moved to England to study music. He soon formed his own orchestra. His group became a very popular dance band. They played on the radio and in live shows.

Mantovani was known for a special sound. It was called cascading strings. A man named Ronnie Binge helped make this sound. It used many string instruments to sound like an echo. It sounded like music in a big cathedral. This sound was very rich and smooth. People used his records to test new stereo music players. He was the first person to sell one million stereo albums.

His music reached many people. His song "Moulin Rouge Theme" was a big hit. It was the first song with only instruments to reach number one in the UK. He also had his own TV show in 1959. Mantovani died in 1980 at age 74. People still listen to his music today. His estate even lets people make new concerts with his music.
