He also led big bands that were very popular.

One of his most famous songs was "Begin the Beguine." This hit record made him a major star. But Shaw was not just a pop singer. He loved to try new things with music. He mixed jazz with classical music. This new style is called Third Stream. He even added strings like violins to his big bands.

Shaw often changed his groups. He liked to make new music and then move on. He did not like the business side of music. He felt pressure to play the same songs every night. He wanted to make art, not just hits.

During World War II, Shaw joined the U.S. Navy. He led a band to play for soldiers.
