Expressionist music is a way to show deep feelings.

It does not try to be pretty. Instead, it tries to be true. This music can sound like a scream. It often uses dissonance. Dissonance is when notes sound harsh or clashing together. It can also have sudden changes in volume. The melodies might jump around in strange ways.

Arnold Schoenberg was a leader of this style. He wanted to show the inner visions of the mind. He was friends with a painter named Wassily Kandinsky. Both men wanted art to show deep, hidden thoughts. Schoenberg wrote a piece called Erwartung. It is a short drama about a woman in a forest. The music shows her fear and distress.

Other famous makers used this style too. Alban Berg wrote an opera called Wozzeck. It shows a man in great pain. Anton Webern was another student of Schoenberg. He made music with a strong, hidden heart. These composers used sound to share the truth of how people feel inside.
