Impressionism in music

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Some music aims to show a mood. It does not try to tell a long story. Instead, it creates a feeling or a scene. This style is called Impressionism. It gets its name from French painters. Painters used soft colors to show light. Music writers do something similar with sound. They use timbre, which is the unique quality of a sound. They might use new ways to mix notes. They use scales like the whole-tone scale. This scale can make music feel dreamy. Some songs have titles like "Mists" or "Reflections on the Water." These names help you picture a scene. Claude Debussy was a very famous composer in this style. Maurice Ravel was another leader. Debussy wrote music that felt very subtle. He used the piano pedals to change the sound. Some people also call this music symbolist music. This is because it uses images to share meaning. Other composers used these ideas too. Lili Boulanger and Isaac Albéniz are names you might see. Even Jean Sibelius wrote music that felt like this. It is a beautiful way to make art.
