Impressionism

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Impressionism is a famous style of art. It began in France during the 1870s. These artists wanted to show how light changes. They often painted outside in the fresh air. This helped them see the sun in real time.

Instead of smooth lines, they used short brush strokes. They used bright, pure colors. This made the paintings look like they were moving. They did not focus on tiny details. They wanted to capture a quick feeling or a single moment.

Many people did not like this new way of painting at first. They thought the works looked unfinished. A critic used the name "Impressionism" to tease them. He was looking at a painting by Claude Monet called *Impression, Sunrise*.

Even with the mean comments, the artists kept going. They held eight big shows together. Famous artists like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir were part of the group. Camille Pissarro was very special. He was the only artist to show his work in all eight shows.
